Community:
The failed levees caused extensive flooding. New Orleans had to start from scratch to rebuild the city. The "Federal Emergency Management Agency" (FEMA), helps communities after disasters, has committed over $800 million to rebuild infrastructure which will help build schools, levees and strengthen the police resources. In addition, New Orleans has spent a lot of money to rebuild. They have been building ten full houses a year with a total budget of $140,000. The government has given New Orleans $127 billion to use for the rebuilding process. 15 billion of the money was used to upgrade the levees to protect the people. However, that wasn't enough help.
After Hurricane Katrina hit, the mayor was shocked and stunned from the devastating attack of Katrina. He announced that the people could leave if they wanted to. New Orleans had to start from scratch to rebuild the city. This would take quite a long time to do and the people can't be living on the streets waiting. So, many people did leave. The population dropped a lot from people who left. The population crashed from about 400,000 people to after Katrina, there were only 230,172 people left. People who left New Orleans were part of the decrease in population but 1,836 people died in Hurricane Katrina. 100 people were missing. This decrease in population amounted to about half of the city. In 2012, the population eventually came back to 369,250, which is 76 percent of what was in 2002. Many homes were destroyed in this disaster. Over 204,000 structures were destroyed which equaled 800,000 housing units leaving people to have nowhere to live.
2,419 people are still homeless in New Orleans. In 2007, there were 11,619 people living in the streets. Before hurricane Katrina, there were about 400,000 people in New Orleans. After hurricane Katrina, there were only 230,172 people left. Many people died from hurricane Katrina; 40% from drowning, 25% from injuries and trauma, 11% from heart conditions, and about 100 people were missing. Nearly half of all victims were over the age of 74. The rest of the people were left homeless or moved.
